Water Damage on Your Phone? Do This Immediately (Not Rice)
September 13, 2026 · 4 min read · Ottawa
Power it off. Don't charge it. Dry the outside. Pull the SIM. Then get it looked at the same day. Skip the rice: it doesn't pull moisture out of a phone, and corrosion can still start inside hours after the phone seems fine.
Dropped your phone in the sink, toilet, a puddle, or spilled a drink on it? What you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything you do afterward, including that old rice trick everyone still recommends. Here's what actually helps, and what to skip.
Step 1: Power it off immediately
If your phone is still on, turn it off right away. Don't try to check if it "still works" by unlocking it or opening apps. Every second it stays powered on with water inside increases the risk of a short circuit that causes permanent damage.
If it's already off, do not turn it on to check. Leave it off.
Step 2: Don't charge it
Do not plug it in to charge, even if the battery is low. Charging a wet device is one of the fastest ways to cause irreversible internal damage.
Step 3: Dry the outside
Wipe down the exterior with a soft, absorbent cloth. Pay attention to ports, buttons, and the speaker grilles where water tends to pool. Gently tap the phone (screen facing down) against your hand to help any trapped water drain from the charging port.
Step 4: Remove the case and SIM card
Take off the case so any moisture trapped underneath can evaporate instead of sitting against the phone. Remove the SIM tray too. This isn't just to dry it, it also protects your SIM card and gives you a way to check for moisture inside the tray slot.
Step 5: Skip the rice
Rice doesn't actually pull moisture out of a phone effectively, and rice dust can get into the ports and cause more problems. If you want to use a drying agent, silica gel packets work better, but even that's a backup step, not a fix for water that's already made contact with internal components.
Step 6: Don't wait to see what happens
This is the part people get wrong most often. Water damage isn't always immediate. Corrosion can start hours or days later, long after the phone seems to be working fine. By the time you notice a problem, the damage is often already done internally.
The safest move is to get it inspected within the same day, before corrosion has a chance to start. We can open the device, inspect the internals, clean any corrosion starting to form, and dry it properly with the right equipment, not a bag of rice.
Water and cracked glass often go together: if the drop that got your phone wet also chipped the screen, read our guide on using a phone with a cracked screen. And if you're weighing repair versus replacement, our overview of on-site iPhone repair in Ottawa covers how the process works.
Bottom line
Power off, don't charge, dry the outside, pull the SIM, and get it looked at fast. The faster you act, the better the odds of a full recovery instead of a costly repair or a replacement.
